Community Supported Agriculture
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. It works as follows: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public, typically consisting of a box of vegetables, and sometimes including other farm products. Interested consumers purchase a share and in return receive a box of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. This helps the farmer receive payment early in the season and share the risk of farming. The consumer gets ultra-fresh, local and often organic food, is exposed to an assortment of new vegetables, and becomes part of a community of others supporting local farmers.
WCF is serving as a CSA pick-up site for Lancaster Farm Fresh Co-operative (LFFC), a group of 64 farmers in Lancaster County, PA. Shareholders living in the DC area come to the church one evening a week to pick up their box of vegetables for the 28-week growing season. For more information about subscribing to the CSA, please visit LFFC’s website at www.lancasterfarmfresh.com.
