Confronting Chaos Creatures

Scripture is full of images that we find intriguing, but aren’t quite sure what to do with. Serpents and sea monsters. Dragons and beasts. Some interact with humans unlike anything we know — like a Serpent who speaks and a sea creature that swallows a man. There are humans that are described with creaturely characteristics and behaviors, like Goliath, Saul and Nebuchadnezzar. There are nations that are described as beasts. Are these merely mythical images, placed in the realm of fantasy, but disconnected from contemporary, life that has science and rationality to sort everything out?
